Clarity
The number of inclusions greatly affects the clarity grade of a diamond. It is noted
how many inclusions are present, their location, size and type. While some inclusions
may reduce the brilliance of a diamond, others compromise the structural integrity.
GIA grades the clarity of diamonds on a five-point scale from flawless, which is
extremely rare, to imperfect. Daniel Diamonds works with diamonds of an S1 clarity
or better.
FL: Flawless. Indicates a diamond that has no inclusions under
10x magnification. Extremely rare and expensive.
|
|
IF: Internally Flawless. A diamond that has no inclusions under
10x magnification, some slight inclusions may be present on the surface of the diamond.
Very rare and expensive.
|
|
VVS1 & VVS2: Very, Very Slightly Included. A diamond having
slight inclusions that are difficult to see under 10x magnification. VVS1 is rated
a notch above VVS2. Excellent quality diamonds.
|
|
VVS1 & VS2: Very Slightly Included. Indicates a diamond that
is nearly flawless to the human eye, but under 10x magnification inclusions can
be pinpointed exactly. VS1 is rated a notch above VS2.
|
|
S1 & S2: Slightly Included. Inclusions can be clearly identified
under 10x magnification and may be visible to the naked eye. S1 is rated a notch
above S2. Good value.
|
|
I1, I2 & I3: Imperfect. Inclusions are visible to the naked
eye.

Carat Weight
Carats are the universal system of weight for all gemstones. There are 100 points
in a carat. Because small diamonds are more plentiful than large stones, the price
of diamonds increases as its carat weight goes up, although this does not happen
exponentially. The price of diamonds is based on a combination of aspects, the size
only being one consideration. It is important to consider the purpose of the diamond
when deciding on its carat weight. A diamond that looks large on one hand may look
too small when placed on the hand of a larger person.
Cut
The cut of a diamond determines its brilliance and fire. The facets of a diamond
are calculated precisely to allow for the maximum reflexivity of light. A poorly
cut diamond will appear dull, with no luster or fire. The GIA grades cut on a five-
point scale: Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair and Poor. Because Daniel Diamonds
hand selects each diamond for its customer once they have chosen a shape, we guarantee
an excellent cut.
Color
The most valuable diamonds are completely colorless. In this respect diamond is
the only gemstone whose colorlessness renders it more valuable.
